The 5+3+3+4 structure.
One journey, four stages.

The new academic structure reorganises school education for ages 3–18 so curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and learner development can follow the child’s stage more naturally.

Structure should follow development.

The stage descriptions below summarise the NEP 2020 design. Grade and age transitions may be administered through state and board arrangements.

5 YEARS • AGES 3–8

Foundational Stage

Three years of preschool or Anganwadi/Balvatika followed by Grades 1 and 2. Learning is play-based, activity-based, flexible and rooted in language, early numeracy, movement, art and social-emotional development.

3 YEARS • AGES 8–11

Preparatory Stage

Grades 3 to 5. Children build from play and exploration toward more formal but interactive learning, with language, mathematics, science, art and social understanding developing together.

3 YEARS • AGES 11–14

Middle Stage

Grades 6 to 8. Abstract concepts and disciplinary understanding become stronger through experiential, inquiry-based and discussion-rich learning, including exposure to vocational skills.

4 YEARS • AGES 14–18

Secondary Stage

Grades 9 to 12 in two phases. Students receive greater depth, critical thinking, multidisciplinary choice and flexibility instead of a rigid separation between academic and vocational streams.

What changes in practice

Not just a new label for old grades.

The 5+3+3+4 structure is meaningful only when the learning experience changes with the developmental stage. A foundational classroom should not be treated as a smaller secondary classroom; a middle-stage learner needs inquiry and application; and a secondary learner needs depth, agency and responsible choice.

School readiness

A practical transition checklist.

Schools can use the structure as a planning lens while following their State/UT, board and regulatory directions. The transition is academic as well as organisational.

Map current grades, age groups and staff responsibilities to the four stages.

Review classroom environments for play, materials, movement and collaboration.

Align textbooks, lesson plans and assessments with stage-level outcomes.

Plan teacher capacity building for foundational, middle and secondary pedagogy.

Build counselling and subject-choice support before the secondary phase.

Explain the structure clearly to families and the wider school community.

A connected learner journey

Continuity matters more than compartments.

Transitions between stages should carry forward what teachers know about learners while introducing the next level of challenge. Shared records, student portfolios, teacher dialogue and family communication can prevent a child from having to “start again” at every transition.

For school leaders, the structure offers a useful way to audit whether curriculum, staffing, spaces, timetables, assessment and support services work together. For teachers, it creates a common language for discussing progression without reducing development to marks alone.
